Our Life Before FIRE

Driving Towards FIRE

I do not remember the exact date this decision was made but my Husband Brett and I are going to lease our house in Nashville, TN and live in a fifth wheeler for an undetermined amount of time. Our goal with this abnormal life style is simple; decrease our cost of living to get out of debt and to eventually have more time with each other. An added bonus to this unique lifestyle is traveling the country. We want to share our journey just in case there is anyone else out there who feels the same as we do and are in search for a solution.

How we came to this crazy conclusion:

I have everything I have ever wanted. I am married to a wonderful man, I have a promising career in health care, a great car, my dream house, and I live in the bustling city of Nashville Tennessee. As a child and young adult this is the life that I planned for and dreamed about; but something is missing, and I am not happy. This unhappiness does not require much self-reflection because I know what is missing. It is time! I have very little time with my spouse. He is my best friend and we have the best adventures together. I also have very little time to spend with our two dogs, Chloe and Duke. Brett and I are thinking about children someday but this seems unrealistic in our current situation.

Lets talk about debt:

I am a nurse anesthetist and it took many Many MANY years of education to achieve this goal. I LOVE my career, but I do not love the debt I now have from it. This is rather personal but between my husband and I, we pay $2,000 per month on student loans! Our mortgage is even more! Like most people, we also have credit card debt and it roughly totals to $7,000 that we accrued while I was in school. And then we have all the other typical monthly bills that add up quickly. Every month we wonder “Where did our paycheck go?”

Our plan to decrease our debt:

My husband works in healthcare as an I.T. specialist; he works from home, which is allowing us to travel. I will work locums as a CRNA (certified registered nurse anesthetist) and Brett will continue his career in healthcare I.T. Hopefully our house will be rented and our mortgage will be covered. A truck and a fifth wheeler payment will replace our mortgage; which, fingers crossed, will be substantially lower than our current house payment. Additionally, we will no longer have some of those pesky monthly utilities. This will enable us to pay off the student loans and credit card debt substantially faster. Our goal is to have this paid off in one year or less. After we have paid off our debt, we will then focus on paying off our house and saving for retirement. Oh, I forgot to mention, we also have this crazy goal to retire early. We do not want to work until we are 70 years old.

What we like to do in our spare time:

When we are not working we try to exercise and participate in activities that we love. Currently I am planning on attempting my first triathlon, which my goal is just to survive! My husband and I also do Crossfit. (Don’t knock it until you try it!) We hike, we bike, plus we are foodies, so all this exercising is VERY important. We also bring our puppies to many of these outings. We love our dogs and we are not sure who rescued who. Corny but true!
